What Do School Counselors Do?
Personal/Social/Emotional Counseling
- Individual and Small Group Counseling
- Address topics such as Healthy Relationships, Physical and Sexual Abuse, Peer Pressure, Conflict Resolution, Substance Use
- Assist with difficult family situations and maintaining success in school
- Collaborate with community resources and mental health professionals, coordinate care services, make referrals
- Stress Management and Crisis Support
- Provide brief, solution focused counseling and coping skills development
- Safety and Support Plans
Academic Counseling and Development
- Assist students with creating a four-year high school program that is relevant to student's strengths, interests, abilities, and post-high school plans
- Counsel students experiencing academic challenges and developing strategies for improvement, as well as collaboration and referrals to available academic resources at BEHS
- Assist students with the development of executive functioning skills-organization, study skills, problem solving, time management, prioritizing
- Credit Evaluations/Reviews with all students
- Collaborate with school teams to provide appropriate educational programming for all students
Career/College Development
- Career explorations and development activities implemented in small groups, classrooms and individually, ie: career interest inventories, aptitude assessments, and career exploration resources, etc.
- Help students understand the connection between school and the world of work
- Workshops offered for resume building, college essay support, college searching and the application process
- Junior and Senior Planning Presentations in classrooms
- Coordinate College/Career/Post-Grad Planning Nights and financial aid programs in the evening for parents
- Direct students to a variety of available resources about colleges and careers
- Provide college representative visits, college tours, career/trade technical school information sessions
- Provide job shadowing, internship and job opportunities for students
